“Working with IndiDesign has been a fantastic experience, right from the start. Once our visions aligned, it was easy to work with them; we were in perfect sync. We’ve been able to work really well, and we have translated the vision into reality with almost 100% precision. We have come a long way since we first visited this vacant plot of land. We could visualise this place (Biker’s Café) even back then when it was a green field. It has come out so perfectly! We have had a great initial response and we’re happy with the final outcome.”

Biker's Cafe

Industry: Automobile & Hospitality
Architecture Design, Interior Design, Experience Design, Branding

The Biker’s Café is one of those iconic projects that ended up being an evolved version of the original vision. Initially envisioned as a premium motorcycle showroom in Kathmandu, the original brief was simple, create an exclusive buying experience that resonates with motorcycling enthusiasts. But considering that Nepal has a flourishing biking culture and is one of the top adventure destinations for adventure seekers around the world, we gave a twist to the original brief.

We created the Biker’s Café.

It is a thriving community space that caters to bikers and non-bikers alike, creating a more relatable and hands-on motorcycle buying experience. We designed the project from the ground up, including the architecture, interior design, the experience design, and branding.

An Evolved Approach to Buying a Motorcycle

Located in Naxal, in Kathmandu, the Biker’s Café is situated alongside the main road. Overlooking a lush green park, it is a café with a view. But the site was also the biggest challenge of the build, with a narrow frontage and rhombus-shaped plot. The structure we envisioned would need stand out from the surroundings yet blend with the culture and context of the site.

We were looking to create a space that would house an interactive bike display which would draw in potential motorcycle buyers. Adding coffee to the mix would create the perfect, relaxed atmosphere for them to explore and experience the bikes at their leisure. For coffee, we partnered with Nepal’s most loved and premium coffee brand. They have been pioneering the concept of Specialty Coffee, Third Wave Coffee, and Sustainable Coffee in Nepal, since 1999.

Thus, the Biker’s Café was born.

Adding Depth with a Dash of Culture

To deal with the narrow frontage, we gave depth to the façade with different layers, designing the front of the cafe to afford more visibility. Designed to emanate a sense of adventure and ruggedness, the glass front brings in the outdoors. It lets in more natural light and gives a sense of openness that is beautifully complemented by the stunning views of the distant mountains.

The material selection for the café has been done after a deep study of the local architecture and accounting for availability of materials. Nepal has a rich legacy of exposed brick architecture. We used that design element as a highlight to complement the café’s surroundings. At the same time, the unique shape and layout of the structure enables it to stand out as a landmark.

We deployed a Steel I Section structure and A1 quality bricks with exposed concrete to complement the exposed brick highlights. It gives the café a grungy aura that perfectly depicts its raw and rugged personality.

We finished the exterior with asymmetrical diagonal slats that add an element of sophistication amid the exposed bricks. The left side of the entrance features the bike delivery area. The right side is taken up by outdoor patio seating that lets patrons enjoy the fresh air with their steaming hot coffee.

Over the entrance, the sleek Biker’s Café logo greets you. The identity is a dynamic representation of the café’s energy, of the bond that encircles a rider and their machine.

Elegant Interiors

The interior design focuses on creating distinct zones – from a cosy lounge area to dynamic sitting. Inside, the two-storied structure welcomes you with its bustling ambience and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. As you walk in, the double-height ceiling draws the eye to the massive curved art wall that dominates the space above the inviting coffee counter. On the left, the bikes are displayed in their full glory, fully kitted out for adventure. The “Revv Up Wall” takes you through the adventurous spirit of biking while the “Hall of Fame”, near the merchandise display, showcases the master adventurers that have left an indelible mark on the biking scene.

At the right of the coffee counter, the café’s seating is lit by glorious natural lighting that streams in through the glass front. The natural sunlight is complemented by contemporary lighting elements that come into their own when the sun goes down.

The comfortable couches invite you to relax with a mug of fresh coffee. The stairs that lead to the top level feature intricate design elements that continue the theme of elegance.

At the top, most of the space is taken up by the back office featuring spacious meeting rooms and cubicles. But the front features an open deck seating with soothing views of the beautiful park across the road.

The meticulously curated interiors reflect the energy, colours, and aesthetics that define Nepal’s biking culture. From rugged textures to sleek furnishings, every detail has been chosen to create an ambiance that resonates with bikers and appeals to a broader audience.
